Mt. Kurikoma is one of Japan's most iconic autumn foliage destinations,Ā famous for its breathtaking colors often called the "God's Carpet". The peak season is short, typically running from late September to mid-October.

Due to the unpredictable mountain weather, we found ourselves surrounded by a thick, white mist instead of the colorful panorama. While walking through the chilly fog and steaming hot springs was a mystical experience, you won't be able to see the beautiful colors if the fog is too dense. To make sure you don't miss the spectacular views, please check the live mountain weather before you head out.

āš ļø IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SAFETY:

This is a real mountain hike, not a casual walk. To avoid injuries, please do NOT wear high heels or sandals. Proper hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, and a backpack are highly recommended.

Whether you choose the Miyagi side for the autumn views or the Iwate side for a historic trail and hot springs, it’s a must-visit destination this season. After a day on the mountain, there’s nothing better than winding down at our private villa, Sorauta Private Stay (宇宙謳) in Oshu-Hiraizumi.

šŸš— Access from Sora-Uta:

  • Miyagi side (Iwakagami-daira): ~50 mins

  • Iwate side (Sukawa Onsen): ~60-70 mins

  • Tip: Don't forget to check the weather and local shuttle bus updates before heading out!
